I am delighted to announce my recent appointment as a Board member for the Homecare Association (HCA), the leading national association for our sector. As we continue to navigate the complexities and opportunities within the care industry, I am keen to contribute my insights and perspectives to bring about meaningful and lasting change.

A Decade-Long Journey

My involvement in the care sector dates back to 2009 when I made the significant decision to purchase a Dom Care franchise. Over the years, this endeavour has taken the franchise independent into the Assist Care Group, a beacon of quality and reliability in the industry. Alongside this, I have also had the honour of serving as a Board member for the West Sussex Care Association for eight years and presently sit on the Surrey Care Association Board.

Advocacy for Zero-Rated VAT

One of my principal goals as a new HCA Board member is to lobby for zero-rated VAT for care providers. I firmly believe this is an essential financial adjustment that will benefit providers and, ultimately, the recipients of care. Achieving this would signify a considerable victory for our industry.

CQC Regulation Reforms

We are witnessing a significant shift in the regulated workforce towards self-employment. This migration demands our immediate attention, particularly in the review and reform of Care Quality Commission (CQC) regulations. This effort aims to level the playing field and ensure that quality care remains at the forefront of our collective mission.

Visit Durations and Fraud Reduction

The issue of ‘call cramming’ has, regrettably, plagued our sector for some time, compromising both ethical standards and the quality of care. I am committed to working closely with all stakeholders to establish guidelines for ‘acceptable’ visit durations and to take substantive action against provider fraud. The introduction of Overseas workers with Carers being added to the Shortage Occupation List brings a welcome relief in staff numbers. But it has also attracted criminals and bad actors, and I pledge to advocate for Victims of Modern Day Slavery, finding paths for Survivors to avoid future exploitation.

Provider-Commissioner Collaboration

Enhanced dialogue and partnership between care providers and commissioners are imperative. A unified voice advocating for quality will go a long way in discouraging opportunistic operators from diluting the quality of services offered. My aim is to foster such a collaboration to help elevate and strengthen our collective reputation.

Looking Ahead

My background in the care sector, and my relentless pursuit of excellence make me optimistic about the significant contributions I can make as a Board member of the Homecare Association. I would like to extend my gratitude to all who have supported me in this endeavour, and I look forward to collaborating closely with my fellow Board members and the industry at large to create a transformative impact on our sector.

Let’s work together to redefine excellence in home care.
